Sam Ratcliffe is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily in painting, printmaking, and illustration. Originally from Stoke-on-Trent in the UK, he studied Visual Studies at Norwich University of the Arts, specialising in etching and other printmaking techniques, and later completed a postgraduate diploma in Philosophy at Sussex University. He now lives and works in Clisson, France.

His early career included collaborations with poet Luke Wright and the poetry group Aisle 16, for whom he created illustrations for books and live performances. His work has been exhibited across the UK, including at the Mall Galleries, Mother Agency, and MuTate Britain, and has featured widely as part of Wright’s national tours.

In 2011, he founded Achromat Gallery in Brighton—an independent space in a converted stable—curating group exhibitions and video art nights that supported emerging artists.

After relocating to Berlin, Ratcliffe shifted his focus to music and video, founding the label Wicked Hag. While continuing to work in illustration, this period was defined by his exploration of sound, performance, and moving image in collaboration with other artists on the label.

Since moving to France in 2023, Ratcliffe has focused on oil painting, working across three new series with the aim of exhibiting later this year. He also continues to compose and produce electronic music.
